Picture Archive Communication System

PACS has three main functions and many benefits
|
 |
Film to Digital...PACS replaces the film-based means of managing medical images, with its three main functions: viewing, storage, and distribution. With the decreasing price of digital storage, PACSs provides a growing cost and space advantage over conventional medical records archiving
|

Imbedded in every PACS is a DICOM viewer allowing convenient, efficient of viewing images, series and studies. Viewers include a range of tools, Including Worklists, Hanging Protocols (with customization), Annotations, Window/Level Presets, Synchronized Stacking, Multi-Planar Reconstruction, Reference Lines, Cine Function, as well as integrated CD Burning. In addition advanced capabilities such as 3D and Volume Rendering are available as needed.
Workflow
Full PACS/HIS/RIS Integration can also improve workflow patterns: When a study has been dictated by a radiologist, the PACS can mark it as "read". This avoids needless double reading. The report can then be attached to the images and be viewable via a single interface. Reports can also be dictated and queued for the transcriptionist to generate. The report can be attached to the images and viewed via a single interface.

PACS provides improved use of online storage and near line storage in the image archive. The PACS can obtain lists of appointments and admissions in advance, allowing images to be pre-fetched from near line storage or online disk storage (RAID array).
Typically a PACS network consists of a central server that stores a database containing the images connected to one or more clients via a LAN (Local Area Network), WAN (Wide Area Network) and/or SAN (Storage or System Area Network), which provide or utilize the images. More and more PACS include web-based interfaces to utilize the internet as their means of communication, usually via VPN (Virtual Private Network) or SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). The software is loaded via JavaScript or Java.

Remote Distribution often Thin Client expands on the possibilities of conventional systems by providing capabilities of off-site viewing and reporting. It enables practitioners in different physical locations to access the same information simultaneously for collaborative patient diagnosis.
