DICOM Viewer
Imbedded in every PACS is a DICOM viewer for review of patient data and studies

DICOM, which stands for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine, is a standard that was developed to “promote communication of digital image information, regardless of device manufacturer” within a radiological environment. It defines:
• How the radiological objects (images, reports, measurements and other related
patient documentation) should be structured
• How radiological objects should be exchanged

The standard is both a file format and a transfer protocol, and it is not tied to a particular manufacturer, hardware device, operating system or software application. This is similar to other common formats such as JPEG image files, which are created and viewed by many applications with few interoperability problems. DICOM images can be displayed using a wide variety of systems, provided that the system includes the appropriate software (such as PACS), and the suitable equipment designed to meet the needs of the physician, the facility and the modalities.
Soft copy reading is the preferred method of viewing digital images. This minimizes the storage space required for hard copy films, as well as reducing the cost of consumables, while improving workflow and productivity. This is made possible by utilizing a DICOM viewer.

Imbedded in every PACS is a DICOM viewer allowing comprehensive, convenient, and efficient viewing of patient data, images and studies. Most DICOM viewers include a wide range of tools, including customizable Hanging Protocols with support for Relevant Priors, Window/Level presets, Synchronized Stacking, MPR, Reference Lines, Cine function and integrated CD Burning. In addition, DICOM Viewers include advanced capabilities such as 3D and Volume Rendering options. Viewing of a DICOM file can be performed by accessing the network PACS system, loading a DICOM viewer on a local workstation, using a web-based viewing system, or encrypting a “light” version of the software with the images on a CD. Regardless of the method, most DICOM viewing software is able to:
- Provide a Worklist from which to choose the desired patient or study
- Query and Retrieve images
- Consolidate orders for a patient into a single exam
- Track and display patient adverse reactions
- Mark the study as “Complete” or “Read”
- Integrate dictation or report copies
- Provide DICOM Storage Commitment
- Command a print to a DICOM printer or paper
