PACS Central RAID 5 Server generally functions as On-Line Archive as well as multi-modality connectivity to all DICOM modalities (X-Ray, US, NM, MR, CT, etc.) within the enterprise. The server includes DICOM database, retrieve, send and store functions. Retrieving of multi-modality DICOM images can be done using DICOM Viewer or any DICOM enabled third party workstation.

- Store of DICOM files sent by any DICOM client application (through the local network or Internet) on the disc-drive;

DICOM database that can be accessed by different vendors' work stations anywhere at the hospital and manipulated with any Medical Imaging software
- DICOM "send", "retrieve" and "store" functions,
- Store and retrieve of DICOM images using the database module;

DICOM minium RAID5 solutions (NAS) (Network Attached Storage) are an ideal, cost-effective long-term multi-modality storage solutions for Small Hospitals, Imaging Centers and clinics. As such any number of modalities can easily send images to the PACS Server for Near-Term archiving. Subsequently, on a first in/first out protocol; studies are pushed to Long-Term NAS.
With HIPAA mandating duplicate copies of patient files, including imaging studies, a second/redundant storage system should be deployed. There are several accepted, effective, available and Time Tested options. The Disaster Recovery methods noted below are listed by relative cost. (1st being the lowest cost etc.)
