Clinical Workstation

The Clinical Workstation is designed for technical and clinical image/study review

There are two classifications of digital viewing workstations, Diagnostic and Clinical (also known as Review or QC). The distinguishing characteristics are resolution and functionality, based primarily on the monitor and the software. These workstations may be part of a PACS or may be third-party systems that work in conjunction with a PACS.  The workstations arecapable of receiving DICOM images from a modality or PACS adding notes or annotations, as well as measurements and images, which can then be sent to another DICOM device, such as an archive.

In the past the sheer cost of deploying a Diagnostic Workstation made it difficult for referring clinicians to benefit from the advantages of PACS. This fact drove the need for a step down in the hardware and the range of services provided by the workstation

Clinical/QC Work Station

Clinical WorkstationThe Clinical Workstation is a PC-based, client workstation that allows you to access the patient data base. Clinical work stations, among among other attributes, generally include intuitive access to tools to improve efficiency These tools can be selected from the menu, from the toolbar, with keyboard shortcuts, or by mouse click and include such features as window/level presets, synchronized stacking, and reference lines. Clinical work stations generally permit the ability to create and save annotations, such as arrows, labels, measurements, and ROIs (Regions of Interest). The annotations can be turned off when viewing or printing. Clinical Workstation's have the ability to add and edit notes about patient and exam The technologist/clinician can update the patient record to reflect reaction by adding notes. In addition, he or she can attach audio and text notes to this exam.  Most Clinical Workstations, dependant on the software, enable:

  • Network and local storage of data.. Enabling local data storage as an emergency backup, to facilitate your HIPAA compliant disaster plan.
  • Ability to copy or send exams to a DICOM device.
  • Consolidation of all patient orders into a single exam.
  • Ability to track and display patient adverse reactions.
  • DICOM Storage Commitment.

The Clinical/QC Work Station may also be capable of performing image processing traditionally performed on scanner consoles. Advanced image processing systems can include 3D modeling reconstruction, color shading, MPR, MIP, curved rendering, volume rendering, volume measurement, surface shading, virtual colonography, tissue segmentation, and other processing tools.

Although the software is a critical component of the Clinical Workstation, the hardware and the network connection are equally important.  These workstations can vary from a system with a high resolution, medical grade monitor to a simple lap-top computer. Note that higher resolution allows the physician to see much more detail without panning or zooming the image. As a result, image quality is higher and productivity is increased. However this also increases the cost of the system, which may be unnecessary for a workstation that is not designed to be used for primary interpretation.  Finally, the network or Internet connection type is directly related to speed of retrieval.  The workstation must be able to access images in a time frame appropriate to the clinical needs of the facility and medical staff.

Whether you require a simple viewing station, an image reconstruction station, a web-connected review station, or a robust Diagnostic Workstation, DICOM Distribution has a solution for you.
